Drop In 26-02-15

The Computer Drop In activities continued today.

A new member arrived with a notebook problem which we resolved, and Brian explained some of the fundemental Windows 8  issues finding apps and switching between desktop start screen and finding apps.  He also has an IPad and will return next week to talk to Phil our Apple expert.

“Brian’s Bumble” (So called as Brian (our website master), who has worked on computers since 1965, still has to ‘follow his nose’, and work out how to accomplish the many tasks he is asked to explain).  Demonstrated  printing photo’s on photo quality paper and canvas. Brian briefly explained some of the issues setting up printer and page properties and printed a 6×4 photo and an A3 canvas photo.

Kath, Dawn and Chris circulated amongst the other regulars assisting as needed, especially Sheila (voted our star pupil), Opening pdf’s was explained and achieved, open office downloaded and installed, etc., etc.

See you all next week!

Netiquette (Net Etiquette)

Net Etiquette refers to the generally accepted ways of communicating on the internet.

1.    Generally entries referring to internet objects are in lower case. (Email addresses, URL’s, search strings etc.).
2.    UPPERCASE is accepted as shouting!
3.    Remember any thing posted on the internet can be seen by others (perhaps by people that you would prefer not to see the information), Keep private information – Private!
4.    Without being too cynical, be aware that contacts from ‘people?’ over the internet via email, social media, pop up items on web pages that are unexpected may not be what they seem. If I tell you I am a young lady of 18 years old, can you be sure I am what I say, or if I say I am from Microsoft and would need to correct an issue on your machine! (Really – Microsoft with billions of customers picked you out for individual help?).

Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etiquette_in_technology for extended information.

Anyone had an experience that they can tell us about? Why not post a comment?

Net Natter for Computing items…

Further to the ‘Computer Drop In’ Thursday meetings it would be nice if we could post items here and generate an ongoing series on related topics and comments extending our interests in computing.

For example:

The Gimp Software

PhotoStory 3

and more…

All comments will be checked by the site admins so no silly comments will get through (and the site admin is ChrisB one of our group leaders).

Keep Safe on the net

Watch out for..

Word and Excel files attached to unsolicited emails! They pose as business correspondance, invoices, bank transfers, etc. They contain macros that bypass your anti virus and download malware onto your machine!

Make sure you delete unexpected email without opening it!
